Empowering the Next Generation of Lifesavers: Our First Student CPR Training!
At HEARTSafe Tri-Cities, we believe that you are never too young to learn how to save a life. On April 20, 2026, we proudly hit a major milestone in our mission to make our community safer by hosting our very first student CPR training event!
Our committee members had the absolute privilege of working with an incredible group of eager, interactive learners from Homeschool Fine Arts. The energy in the room was inspiring as these young community members stepped up to become the next generation of first responders.
This successful event was a true community collaboration. We were honored to partner with the heroes at the Spring Lake Fire Department and the dedicated team from Project ADAM Michigan (a program of C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital). The session was graciously hosted at the Nortonville Gospel Chapel in Spring Lake.
Understanding the Heart and Recognizing the Signs
Before diving into the physical skills, we talked about the incredible machine that is the human heart—and, more importantly, what happens when it suddenly stops working.
One of the biggest barriers to bystander action is simply not knowing what sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) looks like. We taught the students to recognize the critical signs:
- Sudden collapse
- Unresponsiveness (not waking up or reacting to loud noises/shaking)
- Not breathing normally (or only gasping)
- Possible jerky movements that might look like a brief seizure
- Eyes rolled back
Now, these students know exactly what to look for so they can respond without hesitation.
Taking Action: Call, Push, Shock
Once an emergency is recognized, the response comes down to three simple, vital steps: Call 911, start CPR, and access an AED. The students were fabulous at getting hands-on! They practiced Hands-Only CPR, learning how to push hard and fast in the center of the chest. They also practiced using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), proving that these devices are safe, simple, and designed for anyone to use.
A Shoutout to Great AED Placement!
While at the Nortonville Gospel Chapel, we were thrilled to see their AED prominently displayed right outside of the sanctuary. In a cardiac emergency, every second counts, and having an AED in a visible, easily accessible location is exactly what we love to see in a HEARTSafe community.
We are so proud of the students from Homeschool Fine Arts. It is an amazing feeling to know we are creating more young community responders who are prepared, confident, and ready to help in an emergency.
