Caring for your heart as the weather warms up
April is in full swing, and with it comes the promise of warmer days, blooming trees, and the perfect excuse to shake off the winter chill. For residents of the Tri-Cities, this means more opportunities to get outside and enjoy our local parks, trails, and neighborhoods.
At Heart Safe Tri-Cities, we spend a lot of time talking about what to do when a heart stops. But today, let’s talk about how to keep it pumping strong.
Why outdoor exercise matters for your heart
Your heart is a muscle, and just like any other muscle in your body, it needs regular exercise to stay strong and efficient. Engaging in cardiovascular activity helps to:
- Lower blood pressure: Regular exercise makes your heart stronger, allowing it to pump more blood with less effort.
- Improve blood flow: Physical activity helps your blood vessels expand, delivering more oxygen to your body.
- Reduce stress: Spending time in nature and moving your body are proven ways to lower cortisol levels, which takes a significant burden off your heart.
Heart-healthy ideas for the Tri-Cities
You don’t need a grueling gym routine to reap cardiovascular benefits. The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week. Here are a few ways to achieve that right here in our community:
- Take a brisk walk: Grab a friend or the family dog and explore the local trails or your neighborhood sidewalks. Aim for a pace where you can still hold a conversation but are breathing a little heavier.
- Dust off the bicycle: Cycling is an excellent, low-impact way to get your heart rate up.
- Gardening and yard work: Believe it or not, pushing a mower, pulling weeds, and planting spring flowers count as moderate physical activity!
Safety first
As you head outside, remember to listen to your body. Stay hydrated, wear appropriate sun protection, and take breaks if you feel dizzy or unusually fatigued.
And finally, as you enjoy the warmer weather with your neighbors, remember that looking out for one another is the foundation of a Heart Safe community. Stay active, stay healthy, and be ready to help those around you!
