More Than a Badge: Why the "Heart Safe" Designation Matters to Us.
You may have heard the news that our community is pursuing a “Heart Safe” designation. But beyond the plaque on the wall or the new road signs, what does this actually mean for you and your family?
Simply put, a Heart Safe Community is one where the risk of dying from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is significantly reduced because the entire city is prepared to respond. This isn’t just a self-proclaimed title; it is a rigorous national accreditation from the Citizen CPR Foundation that requires us to meet specific, life-saving criteria.
The “Chain of Survival” To earn this designation, a community must demonstrate extreme preparedness across the “Chain of Survival.” We have committed to fulfilling 13 strict requirements, including:
- Widespread CPR Training: Ensuring residents and city employees know how to act when seconds count.
- Public Access to AEDs: Placing Automated External Defibrillators in parks, public buildings, and gathering spots where they are easily accessible
- Aggressive Response Protocols: Equipping our first responders and hospitals with the latest resuscitation strategies to improve survival rates.
Why It Matters...
Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at any time. In communities without these protocols, survival rates can be alarmingly low. By becoming a Heart Safe community, we are weaving a safety net across Grand Haven, Spring Lake, and Ferrysburg. It is our promise that if your heart stops beating, your community is trained, equipped, and ready to help restart it.
